Local Attractions - Nearby
Within easy driving distance there are an immense number of attractions - some are local, many are within 45 minutes'
drive and others are further afield. The Cotswolds is an area of outstanding beauty with its many delightful towns and beautiful villages, and Stouts Hill, the only Holiday Resort in the Cotswolds, is ideally situated for visits to the cities of Bath, Wells, Gloucester, Worcester and Oxford. Noteworthy towns are Tewkesbury with its Abbey; Cheltenham, famous for its race meetings and numerous music and arts festivals; Cirencester, the largest town in Roman Britain, and Tetbury with its royal residents, the Prince of Wales at Highgrove and the Princess Royal at Gatcombe Park. Many choose to venture a little further afield to marvel at prehistoric Stonehenge, Avebury Henge and Silbury Hill. Others are drawn to Shakespeare country at Stratford-upon-Avon. The Wetlands and Wildfowl trust at Slimbridge, Westonbirt Arboreturm and Berkeley Castle are all within easy reach. Nearby . . . The immediate area of Uley and Stouts Hill is criss-crossed with public footpaths, most of which can provide short or longer walks in spectacular countryside. Surrounded by high, densely wooded hills and set in its own 'secret' valley, Stouts Hill has a magical location. From Stouts Hill there is a lovely valley walk to the Tudor manor house of Owlpen, a treasure house indeed. For the more energetic a "must" walk is to the flat-topped hill of Uley Bury overlooking Stouts Hill. Once an Iron-Age hill fort it now provides a memorable circular walk with stunning views over the Severn Estuary into Wales, the Forest of Dean and (on a clear day) the Brecon Beacons. Uley is an attractive village a few minutes walk away from Stouts Hill. It has the well-known Uley Brewery, an inn, a well stocked post office/general stores and an interesting church. Other local attractions, all within a very few miles, include the attractive market town of Tetbury which has close associations with Prince Charles and has lots of antique and other interesting shops. Just as interesting are the shops at Nailsworth. Tyndale's Monument stands proudly on the summit of Nibley Knoll at nearby North Nibley. This was erected as a memorial to William Tyndale, a translator of the bible into English. A "must" is a visit for coffee or tea to the beautiful village of Painswick and a tour of the fine church and its churchyard, in which 99 well-clipped yew trees provide a spectacular sight. Three local attractions are nationally famous and demand a visit. These are the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge, historical and picturesque Berkeley Castle and Westonbirt Arboretum. Also at Berkeley, you will find the Edward Jenner Museum - find out about the man responsible for eradicating smallpox, and other major contributions to the world of medicine. The list is endless - but should include numerous local golf courses! | |
