Local Attractions - Within easy Travelling Distance
Again, you will be spoiled for choice!Bath - The historic city of Bath is thirty minutes away with its Georgian architecture, ancient Roman baths and numerous and varied museums. Everybody's highlight during a stay at Stouts Hill will be the Roman city of Bath, the whole of which is uniquely a World Heritage Site. Start your visit with morning coffee and Bath buns in the Pump Room and listen to the three-piece piano trio as you do so. Adjoining the Pump Room are the famous, steaming Roman Baths and museum - another "must". Across the square, Bath Abbey will provide a rewarding visit. There are many other attractions in Bath. Cheltenham - This Regency town well repays a visit with its elegant streets and townhouses, its Pittville Pump Room, a lovely theatre (The Everyman) and a feast of inviting shops. Cirencester - This was the second largest town in Roman Britain. It is now a charming market town with a handsome church, fine buildings and some first class bars and restaurants. Bristol - This large and growing city is full of historic interest with its Cathedral, many churches, old established businesses (eg Harvey's) and the iron-clad SS Great Britain, which is being lovingly restored to its original condition. Gloucester - This city will attract those with a bent for history and the highlight has to be the superb Cathedral. Also, don't miss seeing the New Inn with its rare medieval courtyard and gallery. Wells - This is England's smallest city and perhaps its prettiest! Be sure to spend time at the Cathedral, its cloisters, the precincts and the Bishop's Palace complex. Badminton: - The famous Badminton Horse Trials take place at the beginning of May and are within easy reach of Stouts Hill. Castle Combe: - Acclaimed as England's prettiest village, little has changes in Castle Combe in 500 years. A popular film location, the village also boasts the famous Manor Golf Course and Castle Combe motor race track. Historic Houses: - Bowood House and Elizabethan Corsham Court house interesting collections and are set in glorious parkland. Lacock: - A picturesque National Trust village of mellow stone cottages scene which provided the romantic setting for the filming of Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice and Emma. Visit the 13th Century Abbey and the Fox Talbot Museum - the pioneer of photography. Malmesbury: - A charming hill-top town and England's oldest borough containing the remains of the impressive Norman Benedictine Abbey - a place of pilgrimage in the 7th Century. Westonbirt: - Each season brings its own natural glories to this inspirational Arboretum. | |
